FAQ

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The NIR procedure uses a safe level of infrared light that is able to penetrate the deeper layers of skin. The light energy heats the water in the skin tissue and causes collagen fibres to contract and tighten. It also stimulates fibroblasts to repair skin cells and produce new collagen. This helps to smooth out fine lines and wrinkles, and gives long-lasting firmness to sagging skin. Because the NIR light energy only heats the deeper layer of skin that contains collagen, it leaves the top, surface layer unaffected.

HOW DOES LASER TREATMENT FOR HYPERPIGMENTATION WORK?

We expose the pigmented area to short pulses of highly concentrated light, which breaks down the melanin that is responsible for pigmentation in the skin.

The melanin is effectively absorbed by the body, reducing the visibility of the dark patches of skin.

The treatment is quick and effective, and most patients only need a course of 3 to 6 sessions, at intervals of 4 to 6 weeks.

HOW MANY TREATMENTS WILL I NEED?

The number of treatments required depends on the size of the tattoo, the ink used, skin type, the quality of tattoo and the age of the tattoo.

WHY DO I NEED TO HAVE A PATCH TEST PRIOR TO TREATMENT?

All patients are required to have a 24hr patch test prior to any of our laser treatments. This is so we can quickly identify if you have sensitive skin towards laser and to avoid any adverse reactions.

ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS?

The treatment is not painful and at the most, you may feel some very slight discomfort. Depending on your skin type, you may notice some redness and swelling in the treated area – similar to mild sunburn – for up to 48 hours. You may also notice that the treated area appears darker, and there is some flaking and scabbing of the treated skin, in about 5 to 7 days after treatment. This is a normal effect of the treatment, as the melanin continues to be broken down and absorbed, and should disappear shortly after.

WHAT IS THE AFTERCARE ADVICE?

You may need to apply a cooling pack to your skin for the first few hours after treatment, to help reduce any discomfort. You may also find an aloe vera gel helpful. If you are wearing makeup after the treatment, we suggest you only use mineral makeup – and only if there is no blistering of the skin. We also advise you to treat your skin gently and: avoid sun exposure (to minimise the possibility of hyperpigmentation or darker pigmentation) use SPF50 sunscreen not pick or scratch the treated skin not take a hot bath, or have exercise or heat treatments, for the first 24 hours.

IS THIS TREATMENT SUITABLE FOR ME?

Laser treatment for hyperpigmentation is suitable for most people. However, before starting any procedure we carry out a full consultation with you, to confirm your medical history and complete an assessment of the area that needs treating. This will allow us to determine your suitability for the treatment, how many sessions you may need and the expected results.
